COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

    1. PHTO 281 Digital Imaging 1 This course serves as a foundational introduction to the photography major. Students complete a series of digital imaging/photography assignments, as well as one individual final project in order to develop their creative practice, research and rhetorical/analytical skills. A combination of production, critique, readings, and written/oral assignments advance student understanding of historical, ethical and ideological contexts. Advanced techniques are demonstrated during hands on in class workshops designed to help students meet their technical and aesthetic objectives. Students engage in instructor led dialogues in order to engage and support one another in the development of their artistic and professional identities.
    2. PHTO 601 Graduate Photography & Film Studio This is a graduate level critique based studio class. Students engage in active studio practice and complete exhibition ready work for regularly scheduled group critiques. Student also meet with the instructor individually according to a regular weekly schedule. Readings are assigned individually and as a group depending on the needs of individual students.
    3. PHTO 360 Digital Filmmaking 1 Students explore a collection of projects in a classroom situation, including critiques, discussions, presentations, and selected readings. Students will complete a series of group and individual filmmaking assignments, and a final self directed short film project that they should expect to work on during the final half of the semester. Students will also make an in class presentation on contemporary artists/filmmakers whose work influences them in some way. Each student will present at least one reading in class and all students are expected to actively participate in discussions and critiques. Students will demonstrate technical proficiency in digital film camera operation, lighting and audio fundamentals and capturing, editing and exporting digital media.
    4. PHTO 690 Graduate Seminar in Photography & Film This Graduate Seminar explored art practices that engage, critique and/or embody the economics of late market capitalism. We looked at work by contemporary and historical artists whose work engages with the broader global capitalist system including but not limited to: Marcel Duchamp, JSG Boggs, Rikrit Tiravanija, RTMark, Sylvie Fluery, Michael Landy and Mark Lombardi. Through considerations of contemporary art, film and video, assigned readings and the internet we investigated the economics of the contemporary art market, the concept of the gift economy, engagement as institutional critique and cooptation of critique into both the art market and the broader economy. Readings included The Gift by Lewis Hyde, Imaginary Economics by Olav Velthuis, Art Incorporated by Julian Stallabrass and Boggs: A Comedy of Values by Lawrence Weschler among others. Students participated in weekly discussions, and produced collective projects that investigated/engaged with economic exchange systems.
    5. PHTO 491 Special Topics , Photography & the Book This seminar investigated the special relationship between photography and the printed book. We looked at work by contemporary and historical artists whose photographic book works serve as the primary record of our ideas about photography including Jacob Riis, Alfred Stieglitz, Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, Alec Soth, Nan Goldin, Susan Kae Grant, and Christine Shank. We discussed the essential role that photography books have played on the history of photography and explored the future of the photography book in light of contemporary digital imaging and book publishing technologies. Students participated in weekly discussions, researched contemporary publishing techniques, presented books and research relevant to their practice and produced a final printed portfolio of their work.
    6. ARTS 391 RVArts Cultural Passport; Tier II Pilot. RVArts is an experiential learning course that I jointly created with Jill B. Ware from the VCUarts Depot. It explores the diversity of visual and performing arts in the Richmond area. Part art appreciation, part community engagement, students attend twelve art events though the course of the semester and generate a dynamic online events calendar of top cultural events on and off campus for the current and following semesters. This hybrid online/offline seminar meets in person at the VCUarts Depot Building for special topic specific lectures including introductions to visual arts, dance, theatre and music. RVArts partners with the VCU ALT Lab to create a web video series documenting all of our guests in conversation.
    7. PHTO 280 - Moving Pixels. This new course replaces PHTO 360 Digital Filmmaking, by combing both photograph and film tracks into the same introductory course. The newly approved curriculum encourages collaboration across concentration areas. My syllabus and and assignments for this course serve as a model for all sections of Moving Pixels. The assignments are designed to explore the role of film and cinema in contemporary art practice, and to introduce technical proficiency in digital film camera operation, lighting and audio fundamentals and capturing, editing and exporting digital media.
