Statement on Teaching
My unique appointment to the VCUarts Dean’s Office affords me a diversity of teaching opportunities, largely within the School of the Arts. My multi-disciplinary practice intersects with departments and research units across Virginia Commonwealth University and my teaching philosophy reflects that diversity. My primary teaching and advising responsibilities are within the Department of Photography and Film where I teach graduate MFA and undergraduate Photography and Film majors at all levels of the curriculum. For the past three years, I have supervised the Photography BFA capstone course Thesis 2, that culminates with a public exhibition of BFA work. At the graduate level I have led the Graduate Workshop in Photography and Film; developed an interdisciplinary seminar on the Gift Economy, that explored art practices that engage, critique and/or embody the economics of late market capitalism; and have served on 2 MFA thesis committees. Additionally, I have regular teaching obligations in the VCUarts Art Foundation Program where I teach a unique iteration of their Time Studio. (additional details below) In 2016, I was awarded the opportunity to co-develop a university wide Tier II Pilot course called “RVArts Cultural Passport.” RVArts first ran as a pilot in the spring of 2016 and an ARTS course the following fall. This coming year RVArts is cross listed as a UNIV and Art Foundation course and is open to all VCU students. Finally, I was selected as one of the 2017/18 Faculty Fellows at the VCU Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence where I will be researching hybrid online/offline teaching strategies as they related to arts and cultural education.
